Tomorrow

When you wake alone tomorrow and I’m not there with you,
Just think of all the GOOD times and THAT will get you thru.

You raised me from a PUP, you did, and it was SO much fun.
And you made SURE we always had the BEST time in the sun.

I LOVED my pool, my sandbox too, and Josie was a HOOT!
I thought she was the COOLEST friend and lots of FUN to boot!

We MOVED out to the country where I could RUN and run,
And I DISCOVERED birds and woods and had a TON of fun!

There were OTHERS living with us but you could NOT deny,
That ALWAYS and forever I was your SPECIAL guy!

We were a TEAM just you and I, and ALWAYS did our best.
We struggled YEARS to get it right so WE could pass the test.

Remember when we TRAVELED, to places NEAR and far,
And where we went we tried our BEST to ALWAYS raise the bar.

There were times we MISSED the mark & REALLY blew the game,
But THOSE times we knew for sure we had the MOST to gain.

There was a TIME my name was called, I thought I’d have to go,
But your love was oh, SO strong, I stopped and said “no, NO”.

You SAT by me and stroked my head and CRIED so many tears.
And it was THEN I knew for sure we had a few more years.

We had a few more things to do, a few more tests to take.
But SOON I knew the time had come to MAKE that final break.

I passed the torch to Brita, who GLADLY took the lead.
And so I TAUGHT her all I knew so SHE was up to speed.

I taught her all the GOOD things, like how to bite REAL hard
BUT along the way I taught her the SECRETS of the yard.

The TRAILS I made along the fence, the ONES behind the woods
The CRITTERS in the wood piles and a PLACE to hide the goods.

Then it got HARD to even walk and VERY painful too.
So it became apparent and you KNEW just what to do.

It WAS so hard, I KNOW it was, but something we both knew,
Was that DEEP down in our hearts, that, NO.. I've not left you.

No matter where you EVER go I'm ALWAYS by your side.
So keep your ears and eyes ALERT for NOW I am your guide.

So WHEN you rise tomorrow, don't THINK we're far apart,
For every TIME you think of me, I'm right THERE, in your heart.

BUT Arsenal... how about Ari?!?

Ari was a goof from Day 1. I took him on a 10 day trip to visit the family on the East Coast only weeks after he came to live with me and he charmed everyone with his antics. The kids had water in a small pool and he discovered that digging in water was a blast so whenever he saw water that's what he did. I eventually put a word to it (DIG of course) so he would dig wherever I told him to. To keep him from digging where he wasn't supposed to, he got his very own sandbox. If he would dig in the yard I simply took him to the sandbox and told him to DIG and very quickly he learned that was his very own place.

Josephine, who was 8 years old, thought he was the greatest thing since sliced chicken and I'm sure she thought he was there for the sole purpose of her entertainment. She did, however, make it VERY clear that SHE was in charge. That happened the first weekend when he mistakenly went for HER biscuit instead of the one I had for him. There was a huge ruckus and a screaming puppy that lastest for oh... 5 seconds. She stopped as quickly as she started, grabbed HER biscuit and bounced away. Ari popped up and took his treat as if nothing happened and trotted away having learned the first lesson of living with Josephine.

So... he survived Josephine and stayed. He acclimated well to the house and learned all about the dog door to go outside so housebreaking was a non issue. He was also 12 weeks old so he was really easier to train.

I fed my dogs a raw diet at that time and would get a small chicken at the grocery store and have the butcher cut it apart and then give them each half... THEY were happy campers. One time I decided to open a can of tuna fish for them so I divided it up on 2 paper plates. Josephine happily ate hers but Ari decided it was dead fish and flipped on his back and rolled on it... on the kitchen floor.

Ari started having trouble getting up in the morning January of 2007. The first diagnosis was Lumbar Stenosis, then mid January he was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis, a tick related disease. Then a few weeks later he was not eating well and one morning I woke up and he was in a coma.

After I rushed him to the vet where he was given a 50/50 chance, I learned more than I ever wanted to about an Addisonian Crisis. He slowly came out of it and several days later came home for the weekend. The next week, no eating again and blood tests revealed that his liver numbers were 10x normal. More IVs.

He now has to get a monthly Percorten shot and low doses of Prednisone to keep him going. Since then he stiffened up – Anaplasmosis again so once more being treated for that. In addition, he is borderline Pancreatic Insufficient and gets enzymes on his food and has some developed Spondylosis.

Ari aged overnight but his fun loving attitude never waivered. He still (September 2008) chases the school bus and keeps the yard free from critters. His Percortin shots have extended to 45 days apart and he seems to do well on 2.5 mg. of Prednisone daily.

During his Crisis he may have actually crossed over but returned because as I was driving him to Great Lakes Vet, THREE large deer crossed in front of me before my first turn. I turned the corner and again they crossed in front of me. It seemed a little weird at the time because they were so big and they didn't really hurry and I had to stop. After researching it I found this written:

The DEER represents entrance into the spirit world. Perhaps the symbol of the deer was used to represent the fleeting life review which occurs there shortly after arrival in the spirit world according to recent literature on near-death experiences.
When I talked to Marilyn Tokach, Animal Communicator, she had a very hard time connecting with Ari which was unusual but when she did, he told her it could go either way and was ok with whatever turned out. Because I'm a true dog lover, I told him that it was NOT ok and that he had more to do in THIS world!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453297051652888131.post-2900802711038412102009-07-24T12:54:00.000-07:002011-12-27T17:35:07.301-08:00Trails and a School BusAri's favorite this was running the fence line anytime a car or truck went down the lane to the neighbor's house. His favorite thing to chase, however, was the school bus that came twice a day. I think he had it timed because on weekends during the school year he would start pacing about the time it would have arrived. Over time, he created trails - along the fence line, looping back around the pine trees next to the house and back down to the end of the yard. He also had trails through the woods because he had another route to run when he was running around the whole yard. One time I counted how many times he did the loop and then calculated it and determined that he ran about 3/4 of a mile in the time it took the bus to get the kids and come back the lane.
Summer of 2009 update:
Ari's health started to deteriorate with the onset of a brain tumor which cause him to not be able to run like he once did and the trails were growing over and disappearing. One day I decided to clear them out an mow them. Not only did I do the ones in the weeds along the fence but found the ones through the woods and did those also. Everytime I walk those trails, I will remember Ari who carved them out in the first place by running until he could run no more. Below is a slideshow of them as we walked one Sunday evening.
Due to Ari's ups and downs with seizures most likely from a brain tumor and his inability to walk, I never thought he's be around the first day of school this year much less be in good enough shape to play with Brita while waiting for it to arrive the first day of school. The first event was the arrival of a dump truck and it's departure, then the kids getting the bus and then the bus itself! At the end of the series of pictures, Brita is so warm from running that there is steam coming from her body. It was a cool morning with low lying fog and at first I thought she was kicking up sand but then realized it was following her everywhere!

February 3, 2006 - First Conversation with Marilyn and she didn't know any of my dogs. (When she first asked me to describe Ari I said he was my skinny dog and my only short coat. She said does he have a big chest, I said yes he does and she said he’s telling me he’s proud of his big chest!)

What can I do for you to help you not to be so stressed and vocal when you’re doing bitework? You have such awesome obedience until you see someone who has a sleeve or is in a suit and then it’s all you can think about He really, really likes to bite so much so that he can’t focus on what he has to do. It’s hard for him because all he can think about is biting….that’s what he’s focused on. He said I didn’t screw him up that it’s just part of his personality.

(This was on a Friday…that weekend was the Mike Ellis seminar at Donna’s. I brought Ari in, put him in a down to wait and he rolled over so I could scratch his belly. He did this EACH time I brought him in and he’s not done that before so people were commenting about it. Normally he would whine…loud! BUT, he did BETTER than he’s ever done and I heard Mike saying as we left one time – Beautiful! He’s NEVER said that about Ari! People asked me what I did to him and I said “OH, we just had a conversation!! Minna knew what I meant!)

Also, what can I do so we can be a team on the field? You looked so good when Greg handled you.
(This was in Baltimore last June when I had him entered in a PSA trial. He BLEW ME OFF in the first obedience to the point where he picked up a tennis ball and wouldn’t give it to me. I don’t think he thought he was doing wrong, I think HE thought we were out for a walk and he didn’t have to listen. On the way off the field I stopped by a guy that I had trained with the week before the trial and asked him to handle him or I would pull him. So Greg did handle him and they scored 84 one day and 88 the next in obedience. 88 ranked him 5th nationally in obedience, according to an unofficial survey at that time and that’s how tough the scoring is. In protection there are 3 scenarios and you have to pass all three and he missed one by ONE point. His over all percentage was 83% which is very good and other dogs that passed didn’t get that high a percentage..

There was a discomfort level with him and he had to focus. (It could have been anyone who is a trainer.) With me there is a comfort level. He is SO tuned in to me, he knows my mannerisms, etc. (Analogy is if I have a dinner party at my house, I’m comfortable with the place. If I have to host a dinner party held at a friend’s house, I would have more focus because I don’t know what’s where. He HAD to concentrate.)
(She said that I have to switch things up with him so he HAS to focus. Different places. Different locations on the field. Switch obedience and protection. Stay outside a fence where bitework is being done.)
How do you feel about the other dogs?

Olivia – she and Ari are friends, like business associates. He Respects her, likes her, reveres her. (She and Ari are the ones that travel together to training and trials…)

Tori – he calls her the Princess. She’s the newest but she never incorporated into group. He feels sorry for her. She’s not “street smart” but “book s smart”. She doesn’t understand dog language and can’t relate to the others. (I hadn’t talked about Tori and I’ve always called her the princess and she hated the other dogs)

Kobie – says she’s HIS GIRL. Arm around her….protects her. …not necessarily girlfriend but could be father/daughter relationship. (They do play together better than any of them)

Teddy – is bigger than him. ….has a bigger personality. ….bigger aura. No real opinion. Doesn’t want Teddy around and wouldn’t mind if he went away. (And he IS bigger than him and he and Teddy do NOT get along!)
Are you feeling ok? If there was one thing I could do for you, what would it be?
He said he loves to run the fence line and would love it if it were longer. It’s the Best thing in the world.

(It’s already 250 feet long and he spends HOURS running it. Every morning from 6am until I bring him in he’s out chasing the school bus and anything that moves. Sometimes for 3 hours if I’m home.) I talked to her for about 30 minutes about Ari.
May 2006 .......Ari – feeling ok to trial – leg? Yes.. needed a break. (he had been limping)
Looking forward to trip with “his girl” he said it’s just the 2 of us going. ….wants to be introduced to everyone as my dog. We’ll do well he said if I do my part. He'll be fine. (this is where we took first place and I made a point of introducing him to everyone.)

Wouldn’t answer about if he was with me before because he doesn’t want to ruin what we have now.
December 6, 2006 .............. Why did you go after the Irish terrier the other day at the dog club – he was really concentrating or gearing up for something (he had just gotten there and he and Kobie were running around the room) She had an attitude and it was purely reactive and only between him and the terrier. It had nothing to do with me or Kobie. She was moving into his space and was rude and selfish. He had to keep track of things and in hindsight it was probably not smart. He never intended to hurt her only tell her who was in charge. It was like the perfect storm and all came together at the same time and he reacted. Physical – back legs fatigued – very fit – not to worry body building competition - Arnold -Training – ok…grand scheme of things ok… winning team. Overall very good.. frustrated and not enough fun.. too long.. not huge reward.. no one available …. Train someone… be able to bite and bite and bite… that what he can do.. on first day let him bite without having to work… chomp on him.. he really likes Greg - Chris ok good too… testerone… he knows I am doing the best I can.. opportunity to offer 2 cents has to… not bitching or complaining.

February 2007 ...............after he almost died from an Addisonian Crisis how are you feeling - *******pretty good…muscle ache between shoulder blade – maybe stress – maybe not stressdo you feel well enough to work*******yea….doesn’t like the surprises like people coming from behind - this is disturbing to him… maybe too much pressure. He likes what he can see. He knows what to expect because it’s the regular guys … when a strange helper it bugs him.. He likes working in defense. do you know how close you came to not being here ******yes he does – at one point he really zoned and was balancing – he was very aware and so on the edge that he had no strong opinion. He is glad to be back and is excited about the working again. He’s sorry he stressed me out and when asked what he likes he answered being outside and being with girls.

I’m thinking about getting a girl puppy to train so when you can’t trial anymore we can still go and you can get fun bites…. How would you think about that? And a girl so you could hang out together. ******* A new puppy should be a girl and he could teach her to work very well. I said bad things too like chasing the bus and he said he can’t help it if she learns those things and that’s not bad anyway.
Ø How are you feeling? ……strong and perky – just fine
Ø How do you feel about continuing to train? What else is there? Upcoming trial? – win – win – we’re gonna win…
Ø How do you feel about Brita?....alot to learn but wants to learn…
Ø What else would you like to tell me? Stop worrying about him running – this is what he loves to do and he’s fine.
February 27, 2008................ Ari – Feels great…..Great… GREAT!!….. Likes to run and roll in snow. He thought he wouldn’t like retirement but seems to have settled in with it – keeps tabs on the critters in the yard and knows what’s going on in the neighborhood. Regarding Brita – she’s good and she has a good attitude and good personality – she’ll never be as good as him when it comes to working but she does some things better (like listening to me). She doesn’t have the drive he has and if I would train them together he could demonstrate so things to help her. Regarding running with her – there would be an initial who’s in charge then things would be ok. That’s very important with her because she thinks she should be. Kobie takes things too personally – when I went after her it was more of displaced frustration – she was in the way. He loves me and wants to go on rides more often – it would be great to find a place where he can get out to run and explore. That would be something different and interesting.
….Whole back end wobbly not losing use of only one leg but actually a leg and a half. Right leg can’t support and he can’t compensate. When he shifts his weight he falls over.
…. Is your time up? He won’t answer it because he doesn’t want to think about it. He's in denial. He knows he’s not making it easier for me or him. He likes being a dog and doing things with me and sometimes being a clown. He’s been with me many times before… cliffs, centuries ago, involved once, dogs together (street dogs). What can I do? Love him and hold him.
I know that I am ever so grateful every time I walk on the field with my dogs. Working at a vet clinic, I am made all to aware of the various ailments that can come up and shorten a carrier – and sometimes shorten a life.
One of PSA’s great supporters and promoters has had an ordeal to overcome with her dog. Laurel Stone was shocked when her German Shepherd, Ari, was diagnosed with Addison’s disease.

Laurel pursued the very best diagnostics and later treatment. Today, Ari is a happy boy with many years left in his bones. However, travel and competition are big stresses for even the most vital dog. Laurel recognized this and although she loves to step on the field with Ari, she choose to do what is best for his in the long run.
Ari competed for his last time this past Saturday. Personally, I think he had a blast- being just barely in control. He loved the bite work. And Laurel allowed him to retire on a VERY good note.
But his presence will be missed on the field. I want to congratulate Laurel for training and working such an amazing dog. I also want to send my appreciation for putting his ultimate well-being above our selfish desires to compete forever.
Thank you Laurel, for allowing me to be a part of Ari’s career and his retirement!
He was my first dog I worked in the protection sports, was very forgiving to my mistakes and always wanted to work. When he started having trouble getting up in the morning last January, the first diagnosis was Lumbar Stenosis, then mid January he was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis, a tick related disease. Then a few weeks later he was not eating well and one morning I woke up and he was in a coma. After I rushed him to the vet where he was given a 50/50 chance, I learned more than I ever wanted to about an Addisionian Crisis. He slowly came out of it and several days later came home for the weekend. The next week, no eating again and blood tests revealed that his liver numbers were 10x normal. More IVs. He now has to get a monthly Percortin shot and low doses of Prednisone to keep him going. Since then he stiffened up – Anaplasmosis again so once more being treated for that. In addition, he is borderline Pancreatic Insufficient and gets enzymes on his food and has some developed Spondylosis. Last year, Ari was 7 years old and in great shape. This year it seems like he’s 11. Training since December has obviously been sporadic and having the opportunity to trial him one more time was wonderful. And, in his defense, after I looked at the video of the bite during obedience I realized it looked like a Schutzhund escape bite to Ari so he thought he was doing what he had been trained for before PSA!!
Kevin – Thank you for encouraging me today to write a bit to the list regarding Ari’s challenges. You’re right; it may just help people who run into health issues with their dogs. I can’t wait to see the photos you took.
I hope you all saw Laurel's post below about Ari. Here is an excerpt from a note I dropped her the other day, which describes my impressions of this nice dog:
Yes, I knew about some of your struggles with Ari's health. It's a testament to how much you love him that you have done such a good job in so many ways. I know that at some point physical constraints have to limit training. All the same I have been impressed with him both times I have seen him work this year. Especially at this point in his career. He was having a blast. Having fun, but really working too...Keep enjoying every day with Ari!!
I remember when I got him as a 12 week old puppy that occasionally he would fire up at other dogs….big dogs….and always male dogs. Easy to control as a puppy but then he got bigger. He isn’t a large German Shepherd and he weight is best at about 70 pounds…. yep he’s been up to 75 and down to 65 but 70 seemed to be about right.
That was the beginning and I decided to make a long term decision and manage the situation which I did for 8 years until Teddy left us in February 2009. Over the years I can probably count on 2 hands the times the altercations happened but the only time there was blood was when I got involved to try to break it up. If I left the picture, they stopped. Once I was in the yard with Teddy and Ari came under the fence that was being installed….not in an “attack mode” but just a “watcha doing” mode. Teddy immediately went into “defend mom” mode and went after Ari. Olivia and I took off out of the yard and by the time we reached the gate, they were following us because, oh my gosh, there was nothing to fight over!

So to begin with it was a challenge to keep them separated and was was interesting is that it was obvious they didn’t dislike each other because if one was in a crate, the other might be laying on the floor right by the crate. So, my commitment to them to provide a home was not thwarted by them not getting along. It was quite a learning experience for me and one that I would have rather not gone through and don’t plan to do so again.

The first video is the car jacking scenario and the beginning of the attack on the handler. Ari is pretty whiney when he barks so it's sort of amusing but he's serious with the bite. We lost a few points because of that and also because of the leash tightening as we stopped in front of the vehicle to put the collar on. Points for the civil scenario were 41.5 of 50.

The attack on the handler I think was one of Ari's favorite scenarios. He was ready and knew what what happening. The voice you hear is my daughter Candace who was videotaping and explaining things to 7 year old Miranda. Ari scored 45 of 50 points which is "With Distinction".

This next video is the end of the attack on the handler where he took a cheap shot as I was picking him up and he had outed when the steward said "out your dog" rather then when I told him to out. Also on this video is most of the courage test which he LOVES to do and he does it well! 67 of 70 points and "With Highest Distinction" was the score.

This next video is the very last part of the courage test (note the cheap shot again and the smile on the judge) and us walking to the edge of the field to wait for the critique. I didn't realize until then that there was a group of Schutzhund people watching who all had German Shepherds and they were all cheering for Ari because he was the only GSD! You can hear them in the background when Ari did the long bite.

Here we have Miranda who just loves Ari and would through a ball for him to retreive. Also is the critique by Judge Darryl Ritchie.

And the last one is us going off the field and getting hugged by someone I didn't even know! How cool is that! Successful day! New PSA 1 with an obedience score of 83.5 and a total protection score of 153.5 for a total of 237. This score earned us First Place for the Trial Day in our class.

The rest of the summer we played in the 2's and actually passed the obedience once. Other stories about this adventure will be in future posts.

Then, in February of 2007, I awoke to find Ari in a coma and rushed him to Great Lakes Vet. After numerous tests, Dr. Jeff suspected Addison's Disease which was confirmed with a blood test from the Marshfield Clinic. He did survive but his career was coming to an end. On July 7, 2007, we participated one last time in Bourbonnaise, IL which will be documented in another post.

Now Ari is enjoying retirement chasing any unfortunate critter that happens to come in the yard and patroling the property for anything that might dare to enter his domain!

A Note: Today PSA1 includes a 4th protection scenario which is one of several that are published so the dogs can be trained accordingly.
The dog sits directly next to its handler on the left side with its right shoulder at the handler's knee. Assuming the basic position is allowed only once at the beginning of each exercise. The handler is to stand in the basic position in a sportsmanlike manner. Standing straddle-legged is not permitted. The basic position at the end of an exercise can be the start position of the following exercise. Handler help is not permitted and if used, results in point deductions. Carrying something to motivate the dog, such as a toy, is not permitted. If a handler cannot perform an exercise correctly because of a physical disability, the judge must be informed of this prior to the beginning of the trial. If a handler's disability doesn't allow the dog to heel on the left side, the dog may heel in a comparable position on the handler's right side.
The judge gives the command to begin each exercise. Everything else, such as the turns, halts, changes of pace, etc., is carried out without direction from the judge. However, it is permitted for the handler to request these directions from the judge.
Praising the dog is permitted at the end of each exercise. Afterwards, the handler may take a new basic position. At the beginning of the exercise, the dog and handler walk 40 to 50 paces straight ahead without stopping, perform an about turn and after 1 0 to 15 paces, show the fast and then slow paces of a minimum of about 1 0 paces. At a normal pace, they are then to execute a minimum of a right, a left and an about turn. The dog must stay with its shoulder at knee level on the left side of the handler. It must neither forge, lag or go sideways. The about turn is to be shown by the handler as a left about turn.

The command "Heel" ("Fuss") is permitted only when starting from the basic position and at the changes of pace. When the handler halts, the dog should sit quickly without help from the handler. The handler may not at this point change the basic position and especially may not move to the dog if it's sitting apart from the handler. During the heeling routine, the lead should be held in the left hand and must hang loose. At the direction of the judge, the handler and dog go through a group of a minimum of 4 people. Because of their character, implementation of these parts of the test requires a considerable amount of time spent on them. The performance requirements may not be impaired by the superficial testing of too many dogs.
